I began this quilt the week George Zimmerman was acquitted for the killing of Trayvon Martin. I had a seventeen year old boy at the time and he always wore a hoodie with the hood up and I knew he would never have been deemed a threat in the same circumstance, so the harsh reality of what happened was personally and particularly harsh.
I’m adding white pickets as well as more blue and black to the foreground — and doing so while reading Ta-Nehisi Coates new and powerful memoir.
Two Americas. And a savage history we have yet to come to terms with. That’s what is more and more obvious to me.
