A jaunt

It’s hot still but we missed the worst of it with a jaunt to the Catskills. Finn had a ball. So did we. No internet made for a peaceful interlude and a hostess with a few culinary tricks up her sleeve made for ease and further respite.

Back to the page. Just looked up the hours of the Mueller hearing for Wednesday and blocked out the hours.

My mom loved the Catskills (her parents had a place next to the game farm in the 1930s and 1940s) …

And I love that you put your feet up on the dash … I told Don I will officially be old when I stop doing that. Also pretty keen on your green diamonds …

These days I put my feet up less having heard horror stories about air bag damage but still can’t help myself at least some of the time!

Before cell phones and the internet, we would cross the Hudson and head west and north into the Catskills, no destination. Drive until the full tank read half and dare another mile, another dark twist in the forest on roads all closed in with the moss and trees woven together, water splashing down a rock wall wetting the car, so close. Get just enough lost to make a one-pump gas station with a greasy spoon diner look like heaven. I still have the map that never helped much.

in 1965 our family went for a holiday in the Catskills with my Uncle Stanley and his family, it was one of those places with log cabins and a communal hall for games like darts and square dancing and whatever, the only thing I really remember about the trip was my uncle wanting to take a splinter out of my hand with his pocket knife which totally freaked me out!

OMG. Did you let him? Our big horror this trip was in the form of ticks. I had to take one off. K had one and Finn had about five.

a first faux pas 50 years ago here in Australia was trying to work out what this line meant,”My Mum went crook at me” in English class, going crook is giving a scolding, feeling crook is feeling sick

We couldn’t believe how quiet it was. We get about one day a summer at home free of tree work, jack hammering, yard crews, amplified parties at the school. It was so so noticeable not to be afflicted by noise.

Getaways are the greatest .. love that you all had a restful time. The ticks not so much. I’m leaving Thursday for 6 days visiting a few friends in Iron Mountain. I try to stay away from the internet and such when I’m away. It really makes it a true getaway. Oh and getting away from all the. City sounds .. always a treat.

Enjoy your time away! If the internet break isn’t enforced, I tend not to honor it. Even though I understand the benefits.

What a great photographer you are! Finney-boy sure does look like he’s having fun! The cabin looks adorable and the rounded mountain so welcoming! I would love a break like this one! Such a blessing.

You deserve a break like this! Finn had a BALL. Ran and ran his heart out. One of my favorite sights: him sitting down in the creek.

Lovely lovely silence and greenery (not ticks). Lovely photographs as always. Every summer when I was a girl I got to stay with my grandma at her Catskill ‘cabin’ which was a house in Cairo NY. I remember the Birch trees and Grape Vines, Porridge with butter and fresh milk, riding a pony some neighbor girls brought over. That was seventy plus years ago, More recently I spent a wonderful time with Jude’s brother Nemo Hill and his husband Julio in their Catskill place: https://mscomfortzone.blogspot.com/2018/10/going-nowhere-part-one.html

We were very near Cairo, which I gather is pronounced like the syrup and not like the city. And thanks for the link. It was fun to see the pix again having been nearby.
