It’s Monday, Feb 2

February 2. It’s not looking like the rolling catastrophe that was January is gonna ease up any time soon. He’s gonna sue Trevor Noah now?

If you’re on Threads, you can read someone else’s (long!) summation of February DAY ONE here.

Yesterday, I added to this old blue and gold scrap and trued up the edges.

I’ve always loved that term of art: to true up a piece.

I’m not sold on the late-addition moon but I may continue to (somewhat mindlessly) adhere scraps to the blue linen which is thick and hard to sew through so we’ll see.

Here’s the vertical Camden Maine quilt. It is defying my attempts to make a little house WITH PERSPECTIVE. It’s getting there but you can’t believe how many attempts this represents.

Meanwhile, I’m turning 69 in a week and I am feeling some kind of way about that. I thought I’d feel this way about 70, but here I am feeling it about 69.

Let me reiterate though: I do not take these years for granted. Not one bit. And most of you know why.

Hard to believe, eh? And yes hearts from before Jude, hearts from during Jude, hearts continuing. Always good to resurrect one now and then. As it happens I found two more in the cellar this morning in a heap.

Ground hog saw his shadow…winter is continuing but with the state of America, winter is ongoing, even when the days warm up. I always loved winter, a time of quiet reflection but these days, quiet is elusive and rage is ever present. Still Bad Bunny won album of the year, will perform at the Super Bowl, ICE OUT he said last night…

Here’s an early Feliz Cumpleanos, Happy Birthday wish for you. Some of us probably have a birthday year that gives us pause. For me, strangely, it was turning 50, everything felt sort of downhill after that. My husband, who is not the most sensitive of men, picked up on that and whisked me away to Maui for my 50th and that certainly helped. I laugh at myself now when I think of this because now at the ripe old age of 78, I feel younger and most days, so does my body, especially when I can dance. The spirit of dance left me for a time but we have to keep on going, keep on doing what is spirit lifting for us, so I’m back to a little hip shaking and swaying and a twirl now and then.

As always, your sharp observations of this ugly world are tempered by the unstoppable joy you possess. Thanks for the early birthday wishes!

Dee your pieces are amazing .. always filled with lots of color and light. The fact that you spend so much time putting them together does not go unnoticed.
For me it’s never been the actual age .. it’s how it could be true that another decade another year has passed. What really hit me was when my daughter turned 50. That was crazy .. my grandson will be 25 on Friday. The best part .. yes is that we’re all still here.

A 25 year old grandson? Wow. My kids need to get on the wedding train if I’m ever gonna see the day…

And maybe it’s not the number so much as how heavy the world feels now.

So, I don’t know what to think of Threads really. There is just so much AI generated content on there. It gives me a headache. Like Twitter but not. I do get sucked in though I must admit.

The AI stuff is obnoxious and everywhere, I agree. I can suss a lot of it out, but that discernment will be overtaken any minute by its improving techniques (and maybe already has in some cases). But to me it feels like Twitter in the early days. A sense of community somehow. Also, I manage to pick up a lot news throughout the day so I don’t need to sit through Nicole Wallace anymore or read much of the Times. I still read articles in The Atlantic tho. And sometimes, The New Yorker.

Dee~ I like the moon – all of them, as it seems moons stand as important as houses in your work. Anyway, I like the fabric and the teeny heart flying off into the sky. May our hearts be that willing to fly off and land where needed. Your work is so strongly you, Dee. I love that. I love that you’ve created a signature by just going. The hearts piece is charming 🙂
What a gorgeous snowy moonlit night! It was 79 here today! Isn’t that crazy?!
So, we are a grade apart in high school and two years in age…I was so darn young when I graduated. Not so sure it served me very well. I think that the state of the country could be impacting 69 being the old 70, yes? And we do not take these years or what we are able to do in them for granted. Yay for Marti and her dancing! I meant to walk only on flat smooth ground today…but then we found a riverbed & well…
Happy early birthday to you my friend.
(Tina) My grandson was 23 last month! How does that happen. We are lucky to be just where we are, even if it is a bit bumpy now and then.

Your industry is impressive. These days, anything I bring a needle to suffers from my lack of attention to the heart of the thing. I can’t even get to the Trueing Up stage. I used to use a carpenter’s laser and rotary cutter – taking rather than adding.
I’m skittering in the slime of those files. Don’t go there.
