The air is cool today. Fresh. And mercifully, for now anyway, the clanging, metallic, thundering racket from behind the school is at a pause.
I am going to finish “Go Down, Moses” today if it kills me. She Said. For the third day in a row.
But now I really, really mean it, because Harper Lee’s new (old) book is available today and a good friend ordered me a copy. 
I used to read six books at a time, but right now I want to finish one, put it down, and then pick up the next. A sign of sanity, perhaps?

Ah, morning noise. My neighbors are adding on to their house so I awoke to saws and hammers and a migraine. I fear it’s going to be a long summer. Your garden is just beautiful Dee. I long for green. I drove past the fire area from Sunday’s fire. Another one of our hikes charred and gone! This is not to be read as a whiney bummer, merely facts.
Have you been hearing the controversy about the new/old HL book? It seems Atticus is only human and therefore has his faults. Mmmm…I don’t know if I can take it!!! I can’t wait to hear what you think.
sorry about your burning world, Nancy. the noise over at the school was so epic that it makes the constant hammering and sawing across the street sound quaint. I live in a noisy world. No two ways around it. Yes, I have heard a lot about this manuscript’s controversy (‘why now’ has yet to be answered satisfactorily to me). Will finish the American Masters show on Harper Lee that I started last night — one thing I have gathered is that this new (old) manuscript precedes the other and was not edited rigorously the way “To Kill A Mockingbird Was” (which apparently read like a loosely strung together set of short stories initially). So I am anticipating that the prose will not be as stellar. And, if Atticus turns out to be flawed in certain ways (i.e. exhibiting racist tendencies) it WILL be hard to take. On the other hand, perhaps that will place him more accurately in his times? I don’t know.

yes! me too. I think that’s part of why it’ll be hard to revise the image of Atticus Finch downward.
I will always love the ideal Atticus, and yet, whenever the new one hits my library, I will read it too, just to visit that place again and hear the stories in whatever new light they are cast. (PS-one at a time is definitely a sign of sanity)
