Cold Snap

In the winter, after the leaves fall, our first floor is flooded with light. It’s one of the things I like most about this house.

Trayvon-MartinOne day last week, when I was feeling a little at odds with myself (I can’t remember why), I found myself thinking, “But this light, I get. This light doesn’t confuse me.”
strange-fruit-on-curtainHow to address the brutal history of slavery in a quilt DOES confuse me. For one thing, there is the question — is this my story to tell? That query triggers the question – does that matter, and if so, how? More on those thoughts later.

The working title for this ‘Trayvon Martin’ quilt is: Strange Fruit, triggered by an email conversation with the fiber artist, Kit Lang.  Ms. Lang responded to the Zimmerman acquittal with two quilts, one of which she titled “Strange Fruit – Stand Your Ground.” You can see it here.

Being reminded of that haunting Billie Holiday song informed the choice of the fabrics printed with trees and vines. The ship in the lower right references slave ships, as does the brown batik with horizontal striping.

I got away from the initial idea of a white house with a white fence beyond which a black boy could not safely go. One of the other Martin quilts may preserve and explore that initial design impulse.

polka-dotsBlogged about earlier here “White House and Privilege” and here “Privilege Progression – quilt slide show“.

"lost objects" ?!!

“lost objects” ?!!

Just signed up for:  THE 2014 SKETCHBOOK PROJECT. You can sign up too until midnight tonight. This wasn’t really a planned action. But there you have it.

The last time I participated, I really loved it. Including the part about having a deadline.  Posted about making it: here. A flickr set with some pages archived: here.  The last theme I chose was “Jackets, Blankets and Sheets”.  Working around a theme can be as productive as having a deadline.

‘Course the second time I signed up I did not do anything. Even with a deadline. Even with a theme. Does that cancel out what I said above?!

Here are the 2014 THEMES:

Strange Neighbors / Borders and lines / A simple place / Accidents / Found! / Dudes and latitudes / To the last page! / First aid kit / Say words out loud / Paper airplanes / This list… / Atlas of… / Greetings from… / 32 Days / This is not about you / This is not about me / Undecided

Hmmm… so many intriguing ones.  I like “This is not about me” and “First aid kit”… although, yesterday in writing class a prompt about finding a lost object was weirdly productive, so maybe “Found!” would be good.

I will have to START to find out the direction.

Boston Strong – journey of a quilt

Boston-Strong-Chinese

I was working on this quilt when the Marathon Bombs went off.

Here’s a slideshow of its making (it’s 3 minutes) – Boston Strong Now II

As my regular readers know, my husband, younger son, and I were touring CU/Boulder at the time. It was snowing very hard. This inspired me to fill the pathways spooling below the houses with white.  Boston-Strong-four-huts  Boston-Strong-indigo-plaid Boston-Strong-leaf-roof  Boston-Strong-wholeAt some point, the quilt was exposed to moisture, and some of the color of the red wool challis bled into the sidewalks. While before it had been a quilt that occupied my lap while hearing the awful news, now it was itself visually linked to the event.

For once I’m glad it took me so long to finish a quilt because it let me come ’round to seeing that the primary message here is one of hope. The little scene speaks to community:  our paths cross each others’ paths; our homes touch each others’ homes; a single moon guides each and every one of us.

It helped that the Red Sox finished the season so triumphantly!
