Walls, if you touch them, do you feel a vibration, a heart beat and no, I don’t mean in the Edgar Allen Poe manner but an echo of lives, a sense of story…I’m especially taken with your 28th photo, the wall with the carved bird behind what looks like a wire frame maybe for a window, a version of an Italian nicho?
Have never been to Italy, but have been to France,(blessed Notre Dame), Greece and Ireland. In each country, I touched the walls, full hand splayed out, wondering, connecting to an ancient rhythm; stones, crumbling plaster holding so much…these photos hold so much, thanks Dee for how you Look at what is before you…
I should have felt the walls more, but even just looking at them sent off so much humanity and notions of time passing. How old civilization is here! One era building atop another, you can see it in some of the bigger, exposed walls. Tonight we arrived in Assisi and listened to a chorale performance in the Chapel of Saint Claire. I noticed the homogeneity of the group and when they sang two spirituals of African American origin, it brought home how different our history has been. How heart breaking. For of course, there were ancient civilizations in America, too, but we wiped them off the face of the earth (nearly).
Maybe I just felt sad —
knowing I wouldnt be able to tell my sister about the experience. How excited she’d have been for me to have visited that chapel! Especially since she took “Claire” as her confirmation name.
What wouldn’t I give for cloth that looked like these walls … and the writings and pastings upon them. RESIST… and dates and and and … I do believe this post alone would provide creative juice for a lifetime!
Dee~ Great photos! So full of texture and variety. Each one had me gasping at its beauty. I saw an eye in the light portion of the 3rd pic and that hoof! Wonder what the story is there?!
We made it to Assisi today! M is a doll! So very sweet. I’m on the second floor. Met the other writer tonight, who is from Argentina and fluent in Italian. She’s staying in the other building.
Yes. I love your photos. When I was in Rome I was mesmerized by the walls, but my photos didn’t capture it. Yours really do!
