This scene is less than nine miles from Billy’s. I’m happy to report that at least his power is back on — mainly because if he’s ordered to evacuate, he needs his electric chair to get down the steep stairs to the driveway. Also imagine not having access to news while this is going on.

Just past where I would grocery shop for my brother’s household is the eastern edge of the mandatory evacuation zone. Not far, in other words. They say the Eaton fire is moving west and for Billy’s sake, I hope so.

Meanwhile here it is face-hurting cold. Not really worthy of comment given what’s going on elsewhere. We kept our dog walk brief just now.

Yes, so many things are worse than a bit of snow and freezing wind.
And now they’re running out of water in places.
Eeek, hope your family stays safe!!
My bro-in-law is ok, but his girlfriend’s home is in the mandatory evac zone (Eaton Fire) and they don’t know anything yet.
Like you said, we won’t complain (too much, ha!) about our cold, yah?!
😓
Has his girlfriend evacuated then? Did she have somewhere to go or did she go to the Pasadena Convention Center?
I’ve been worried. About your family and also mine that is in the LA area, and my closest (east coast) cousin is visiting now, and said only her niece there is close enough to be “smelling the smoke and others are safe”. But that was this AM. JFC. terrifying.
Not to minimize the danger but almost everyone in LA can smell smoke now.
I’ve been pouring over maps all morning. C is an hour south so this doesn’t affect him at all.
I think my cousin’s niece is near Venice Beach.
How will people be saved who are in the way, it is absolutely terrifying.
A friend near Santa Cruz told me her story of the fire that went through those mountains (several years ago now). They were saved because the fire jumped across the road they lived on and went off in another direction. Somehow I never realized how fast it can change, how fast it can grow.
Venice Beach isn’t great. Santa Monica is partly under evacuation orders.
It’s just so awfully heartbreaking … so very scary for so many. It’s just one devastating disaster after another. I sure hope your brother will continue to be safe.
So many people are losing all their worldly possessions.
Oh, Dee…I’m so glad your brother and his place are okay for now. Will he leave early, due to power issues.
We had a long night too. Are okay right now, but Hurst Fire is closer and new fire too. Just posted, for those that want to know. Thankfully, we’ve had power the whole time. Otherwise, like you say…how the heck would I know what is going on. Pretty scary: too windy for air support, ran out of water and a new fire near me.
sigh
It just keeps spreading. There’s a water problem up in Altadena too. I feel for you. The worry. Your asthma.
Yeah, Dee. It is so bad. The fire hydrants just can’t keep up with this much fire. The amount of acres, structures lost, deaths and injuries have all gone up. The containment has moved past 0.
I just now heard there is a new fire in Santa Monica. Haven’t heard the details yet. sigh.
My asthma has been okay, thanks. Of course, I haven’t set foot outside.
100 thousand evacuated, 100 thousand more on evac warning!
OMG. How do you go to sleep on a night like this?
I don’t think I will. I very briefly dozed on the couch last night, fully dressed. ha.
I don’t blame you.
Saying prayers for all and hoping that Billy will be able to stay in his home and be safe. We have family in Los Angeles, Rolling Hills, Santa Ana and Dana Point… no word yet from any of them but I’m assuming that they are ok…Of all of the disasters, I’ve experienced an earthquake and a tornado, fire to me is the most frightening…
Thanks Marti and I hope your friends and family stay safe!
Sending prayers to all in LA and families of. Meanwhile I wish something bad would happen to The evil guy-elect for the sake of the rest of the world.
I struggle with layering the map of LA with any particular address in my brain. I don’t know LA myself well enough. But It looks like maybe Billy’s immediate area is still ok. I know you are glued to the situation and I hold you in the light, Dee.
Thank you!
trying to imagine what the view must be from your brother’s house … hoping the worst of it remains far in the distance
So far, just smoke I think.
not a lot to say, just that it is scary
relieved to read your brother’s okay, Saskia
Thanks Saskia. He’s okay today. Winds to pick up tomorrow.
