LA love and waffles

This grabbed me just now.

Made buttermilk waffles this morning that were out of this world. Billy keeps bourbon-flavored vanilla in the pantry. Was that it? Or was it the addition of a couple fat tablespoons of corn grits? (a Cook’s Illustrated trick). He has a waffle iron to die for and since we just threw ours out due to a fraying electrical cord, I know what I’ll be buying when we get home.

This is the recipe I happed upon this morning. From the website Lilluna.com

I’ll end with the observation that if it weren’t so scary and consequential, it’d be hilarious how the news media acts as if our dear president is deliberating about Iran. As if he had the capacity. As if he actually gave a shit.

He’s an id in a gross skin suit with no ability to process information, never mind think strategically. Anne Applebaum said it best. Here she is.

Waffles are great, haven’t made any in so long but I did make pancakes from scratch on Wednesday…do think that the bourbon vanilla did the trick for your waffles!

Not goona spoil my weekend by talking about the dysfunctional inhabitant in the White House: Instead, I watched LA News in the form of Dodger stadium not letting ICE get into their parking lots. Latinos love baseball and have supported the Dodgers for many, many years. One of my summer jobs while I was in college was working in a migrant camp near my hometown: I grew up in a small CA farming town-tomatoes,, cantaloupes, cotton. I helped out in the office, translated when necessary, collected rent, helped set up and worked in the bi-lingual preschool. Mexican Americans from several different states traveled the summer circuit. I don’t recall very much scrutiny in terms of verifying legal status, etc. On the weekends, sometimes I would be invited to come and enjoy BBQ and kids and adults would be playing baseball; once in a while they would invite me to play but I w as a pretty lousy batter so I usually played catcher! Later in the day, someone would bring out a guitar and sing and Senora Moya, the grandmother of a large family, would get up, take my hand and we would dance. The Dodgers have been late to speaking of their Latino support but news reports say that they have given $1million to families who have been disrupted by ICE.

I’m back because I did not want to speak of Trump but he has just gotten us in it; we have bombed nuclear facilities in Iran…he is supposed to speak to the country, supposedly, within the hour…I cannot bring myself to watch is gloating…

The Dodgers have stepped up to the plate, so to speak. It was so great to see.

I hope someday that you will gather up some of your story telling as it appears here and on other blogs and preserve them for your kids and grands.
