Ants and their dead

A week ago the bottom of this tiny honey jar was lined with dead ants. Drawn to sweetness. Killed by sweetness. It maybe wasn’t funny but we joked that the honey jar was a better ant catcher than the plastic poison-filled disks that we have littered on the counter here and there.

Imagine my surprise then this morning when I discovered that the jar was not only cleaned of every sticky drop of honey, but all the dead ants were gone.

Vanished.

Did members of the colony come to the windowsill while we slept and retrieve their dead? If so, what an astonishing thing.

I am currently experiencing a multi-week long ant invasion. I wonder if I should give it a try… Nothing else seems to work. I don’t use poison, unless you count Fabreeze, lysol, peppermint oil, and lysol wipes – nothing seems to be working. Maybe Honey will do the trick!

When I was a kid, we had a terrible problem with ants in the kitchen. We would put out little custard cups of soda and within a day or two they would be rolling with ants trying to get out and a pile of dead ants as well. That was our solution to aunt for the longest time, until the year we had to take a duckling in who then lived in the house for about six months. We named him Dirty Duck, and he is a whole story unto himself. But! After the era of Dirty Duck, we never ever had ants again. A short tale For anyone looking for a permanent ant solution. However, I must warn you, ducks do not paper train.

I’m thinking Dirty Duck may be my next open mic story! I had been thinking I was done open mic-ing bc I’m out of stories. And now BOOM! There’s Dirty Duck!

Dee~ Yeah, that would be strange! But, alas one quick search of “do ants retrieve their dead” and I found out ‘yes’ – plus way more info than I ever want to imagine involving mass amounts of ants! My first home here was on an ant hill, I swear! Never had such bad ant problems as in that home of 3 years. ugh.
As I type this, I remember you were in my dream last night. 🙂 We were talking at a park and you were doing the monkey bars (like we had in grade school). Then Ken (I’m guessing) came to get you. Before you left, there was a warm hug involved. Nice to see ya Dee!
