Finishing small things

Here is the word added to the small Journal Quilt.  I think of ‘freedom’ as something robust and tawny (who knows why), and yet here it is in a whispery pink. . . freedom as something subtle and fragile.

This is the finished piece.

The moon gave me a few problems.  The chenille vine upholstery fabric was thick, and seamed, even thicker.  Next time, lay flat and don’t seam?  In any case, to cover the bump, I added lace.  And, to balance things out a little, I tore some of the blue netting.

The lower lunar section reveals an inkjet fabric print of an antique map of the constellations.

“Free” has been on my mind in the wake of handling all of my free fabrics.  “Free” is on my mind thinking about what holds me back.  Something about spring sets a little piece of me free.  So grateful.

This is such a beautiful fabric painting, and I love your “whispery pink” word stitched in cursive: “free.” Being free IS such a fragile thing, I think you picked the perfect color. Holding onto ourselves is such a fragile thing. I see your little house holding on to itself in the middle of a great landscape. In our discussion about being artists and writers, I thought of how hard it is to become who we really are, with so many voices trying to tell us who we are. I love this little house standing up for itself, and being “free.” xo Kari

P.S. In your last comment to me on my blog, you accidentally gave me a magic “Wand,” and so I used it to perform a little magic! 🙂

    thanks Kaye and Kari…

typos are interesting things… I have a friend who is a writer who made the decision years ago that in email, anyway, she would let typos stand…

I noticed “wand” in this discussion of transformation and maybe, even, magic, and thought… hmmmmmmmm maybe that is a better meaning that what I intended…

I’ll hop over now to see what you did!

Yes, I always let the typos stay (especially since I make them myself), but I couldn’t resist waving that magic wand and making this particular one disappear. But now I am thinking I wish I had gone down a long meandering and magical path about wands instead. Oh well. I’ll save that for next time! xo
