A trip planned

Dog sitter – check

Tickets to Legacy Museum and Whitney Plantation – check

Accommodations near where above photo was taken (Oakley Plantation, where James Audubon briefly lived — that’s his desk above) – check

Starting in Montgomery and traveling through to New Orleans, I couldn’t be more excited! I’ll be sure to bore you to death with tons of pictures when the time comes (next month).

Need I say more?

A trip! Fun. Have a great time!!

And New Orleans too. We’ve been throwing that trip idea around too. Can’t wait. I love that French Market. You’re going to have so much fun. Say hello to the voodoo queen for me.

And your story on Audubon. Cool! I have always been a big fan without knowing his backstory. Hopefully that doesn’t ruin him for me.

He was a complicated guy. Terrible at making money. Focused to the point of being selfish. But talent enough for a couple of lives. And a confabulist? For instance, he used to claim he’d been a student of Jacques-Louis David but there doesn’t seem to be any real evidence of this.

Cherie… one cannot ever be bored by photos from New Orleans, so I will be so delighted to see all of yours and share in the magic that is New Orleans, a place I came to know as a surprise trip for my 60th birthday, We went in 2007, two years after Katrina. You could see the devastation in so many of the parishes. We had learned that St. Bernard’s parish was holding a fund raise r to help local schools so we bought jams and salsas and were very moved by the strong spirit of the people.National Geographic had a touching exhibit of several hundred photos of the devastation that was Katrina at The Cabildo,” a historic Spanish colonial building in New Orleans’ French Quarter, located at 701 Chartres Street next to St. Louis Cathedral. Built between 1795 and 1799, it served as the seat of Spanish government, the site of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase transfer, and a city hall. Today, it functions as a Louisiana State Museum showcasing Louisiana’s history.”

Rich surprised me with a yellow feather boa and I wore it every day,, sashaying down the street and sidewalks, spilling powdered sugar all over the boa as I ate beignets at Cafe du Monde . My brother in law loved New Orleans jazz; he had died the year before so I was able to join in a second line, bedecked with boa, and dance in his honor…AND no I did not flash my boobs in Bourbon Street but still managed to get thrown a green bead necklace. It could have been gold or purple beads but the spirits smiled on me and gave me my favorite color.it was green…

Oh and one more thing besides taking a ride on the Natchez, a steamship, I ate alligator in Lafayette, where I had my first introduction to zydeco. I loved it so much that we returned the next month to attend an all day music festival in Lafayette, home of Creole and Cajun culture. Dancing went on all day and they thoughtfully put couches on the grass so you could take a rest!

Before I close, of course I wanted to explore some of the New Orleans spirit word, ala voodoo, but this was not Rich;s cup of tea. A few years later a friend brought back a voodoo doll from New Orleans for me but over the years, she vanished. Wish “she” were here for me to see if I could work some sorely needed spells…!!!

Oh the thrill of reading this! I could easily see you in your yellow boa, dancing … I hope you copy and paste this into your memoir file!
I’m excited about beignets. Also jumbalaya and po’boys.

Oh my … NOLA … such great memories from 2016 (how has it been that long?) I hope you have a chance to go to the Newcomb College Museum at Tulane … it looks like they just opened a fab exhibit about the pottery made there.

Like Marti, we ate beignets at the Cafe de Monde, which were better by far than any others we ate during our long weekend stay. And po’boy sandwiches … too die for.

Can’t wait to revisit through your eyes next month!

Oh wait .. I’ve been to the Legacy Museum!! We were visiting my brother in Birmingham and I’d heard about this recently opened Museum. It was AMAZING but it was our only stop before needing to head home. I always wanted to go back to see and do all the things that Marti has written about here. Oh Dee you’re going to have a wonderful time. I’m happy happy for you!!
